Reviews can be used to help make up for points you may have missed due to an absence. You are encouraged to look for sources of scientific discovery outside the classroom. The reviews are worth a maximum of 25 points each. The length of the article you review (or a full hour video), the appropriateness of the topic, and the quality or your writing will determine the amount of credit you receive.
Source: Scientific article from a magazine or a newspaper.
Topic: Any scientific topic related to geology.
Article Length: The magazine article text should be no shorter than 3000 words. Four pages in a magazine article should be the equivalent to a full page of text. Several smaller newspaper articles may be combined to form a text of adequate length.
Your review: Present a well written summary of each article you review. Your summary should be at least three-quarters of a page in length, using a standard handwriting. Following the summary you should critique the article. As part of your critique you might state if you found the article or topic interesting. Was it well written? Did the topic relate to a topic are studying? You need to include the following information in your review:
1) Name of the source of your article.
2) The pages on which your article was written, month, volume, etc...
3) How many pages of magazine text equivalence (without pictures) was your magazine article, or how much space in a newspaper did the article cover.
Topic: Any scientific topic related to geology. The Discovery Channel is a good source, and Public Television usually has at least one show per week, such as NOVA or the MIRACLE PLANET. Commercial Stations also have appropriate shows.
Show length: Should be an hour in length.
Your review: Similar to above. Take notes during the show, so you have facts at hand when you write your summary. You can also rent a video at a local store, such as the National Geographic videos.
Include the following information:
1) Name of show.
2) When the show aired on television, and what channel it was on, or if you rented the video.
Your goal is to learn about science in such a way that you may not only enjoy your studies in this class, but that you might wish to continue your studies in this field in the future. If you have any spare National Geographics or other scientific magazines at home that you might be able to donate to your school, they would be greatly appreciated.
