Bodenburg Butte and Moose Creek
Field Trip 2001
Purpose
: Study Matanuska Valley glaciation and river erosion, and to hunt for fossils along the stream banks of Moose Creek. Our 14th annual hike.

Participants: Students in Mr. Holm's Geology I & II classes. Please, parents: we need for you to come along to make this field trip possible.

When & Where: Saturday April 28, 2001, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Meet in the front of the school by the flag poles, where the bus will wisk us away at 9:00 AM.

Cost: Four dollars per student to help pay for part of the cost of operating the school bus and for parking at the base of the butte. Funds need to be paid to Mr. Holm no later than the day before the field trip ( cash or check to Service High School ).

Credit: The credit you receive will be based upon your efforts to make the field trip a successful experience for everyone involved, and the effort you make in completing the planned programs. Points obtained may be applied to meet special project requirements.

Requirements: You must have the Parent Consent Form signed by your parents or guardian. Signed forms must be turned into Mr. Holm no later than 2:00 PM the day before the field trip. Have your picture taken on the top of Budenburg Butte during the field trip, and turn in one of the fossils you find, placed in a plastic bag with a name tag to Mr. Holm. You can get your fossils back within a couple of days.

Equipment: Bring along a day pack and clothing to deal with any weather conditions. Running shoes or light hiking boots will do nicely. Also, bring a zip-lock plastic bag. Take a hammer along to crack rocks open as you hunt for fossils.

Schedule
9:00 AM - 10:30 AM.
Meet by the flag poles in front of the school. A school bus will take us to Bodenburg Butte, leaving at 9:00 AM. Please be prompt. See the newspaper article and map for details on the hike.
10:30 AM - 11:20 Am. Hike to the top of Bodenburg Butte. Visualize the effects of glaciation 10,000 years ago. Have your picture taken and then proceed back down to the bus.
11:20 AM - 12:00 Noon. Board the bus and we will head over to view the bluff erosion along the Matanuska River. From there we will head for McDonald's in Palmer for lunch.
12:00 Noon - 12:30 PM. Half an hour for lunch. Eat at McDonald's or bring a lunch with you from home. You can also head for Carrs across the road , but look out for traffic. Please do not litter. Make it a point to leave places we visit cleaner than when we arrived.
12:30 PM - 12:45 Pm. Drive to Moose Creek, six miles north of Palmer, and park in the campground parking lot. Walk across the Moose Creek bridge and head up the RIGHT hand side of the creek about 200 yards to where the fossils are located. Bring the hammer, a plastic bag, and a note to place inside, giving your name, and the period for your geology class.
12:45 PM - 1:30 PM. Hunt for fossils.
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM. Return by bus to Service High School. Leave your fossils with Mr. Holm. Have a great time.
