Our stable, swift and nimble WindRider single person trimarans offer a perfect way to explore the spectacular Columbia Glacier wilderness. These remarkable craft offer many of the advantages of a kayak but with excptional stability. In fact the middle hull resembles a kayak. One snuggles down in the hull protected from the elements by a spray skirt. Steering is accomplished with foot pedals. In the WindRider you skim along close to the water like a kayak but at much greater speeds. In total harmony with your surroundings, only the gentle lapping of the waves against the hull betrays your presence to the passing wildlife.
The moderate and reliable glacier winds issuing from the nearby Columbia Icefield provide ideal sailing conditions for these safe and easily mastered craft. The WindRiders are very maneuverable, and once you get the hang of how the boat handles, you will enjoy dodging nimbly in and out among the numerous icebergs spawned by Columbia Glacier's drastic retreat. The boats are easily beached and most excursions feature a lunch break on one of the area's many isolated beaches. We can guarantee, whether you are an experienced sailor or a total novice, sailing among icebergs surrounded by the dramatc backdrop of Columbia Glacier and the high Chugach range will provide you with a sailing experience you will never forget.
The WindRiders are so easy to master that novices after a short dockside sailing lesson, a dockside introduction to the boat, and a half hour's hands on experience can confidently handle the boat on one of our guided tours. We have had 9 and 10 year olds easily master the boat - the only major requirement being that their feet reach the foot pedals. An expert guide accompanies each tour providing additional instruction when neccessary. Many of our guests come to the camp to kayak; but when they see the WindRiders, want to change their plans. To insure that we have a guide available on any particular day, it is always best to schedule in advance.
