Alaskan Wilderness Sailing and Kayaking has chosen Wilderness Systems' WindRider®sailing
kayaks for tours of the Growler Island area. Join our small flotilla of
fast, stable, single person trimarans as we tack through the ice berg strewn
waters of Columbia Bay en route to one of the area's many great destinations.
Ghost silently along densely forested shorelines barely distubing the abundant
wildlife. Although sailing our large boat against this back drop of unparalleled
natural beauty certainly has great appeal, the WindRider offers the added
intimacy of close, inshore exploration plus the rewards of skippering a
boat yourself. Even if you have never sailed before, the WindRider®is
so stable and easy to learn that we can have you up and sailing in no time
- although we do suggest that beginners sign up for an extra half day's
sailing lessons ($30) the day they arrive at Growler Island Camp.
Why We Use WindRider Trimarans
SAFETY
Wide beam and ample flotation make the boat unsinkable and virtually
uncapsizeable. The boat is easily reefed. Boom height allows for safe, effortless
jibes.The boat is easily beachable in an emergency. Extremely rugged construction.Watertight
integrity insured by a kayak-like spray cover.
COMFORT - Sailor's lower body is protected by the hull and spray cover
similar to most kayaks but much roomier. Comfortable padded seat and backrest.
Boat heels only slightly. Wave piercing hulls knife through the water creating
very little spray and reduce hobby horsing in a chop. Less fatiguing than
a kayak; little paddling is required.
PERFORMANCE - Easily driven hull moves well in the light airs. Points
well to windward. Exhilarating speeds obtainable in moderate breezes. Destinations
unreachable by our regular kayaks become feasible.
EASE OF HANDLING - Exceptional stability makes the boat easy for beginners
to handle. Intuitive, foot pedal steering allows novices to concentrate
on triming the single mainsail. No hiking-out necessary. Effortless jibes.
