Growler Island Weather
The following current weather links provide indications of the present conditions at Growler Island Camp. Although Valdez and the weather buoys are nearby, the surrounding mountains, the protection of Glacier Island and the influence of Columbia Glacier and ice field profoundly affect the weather at the camp. Glaciers like mountains create their own weather. Summer weather at the camp tends to be cooler than Valdez but often clearer and drier due to a local high pressure system created by the glacier. The winds in Columbia Bay are usually steady but light (10 knots or less) and blow from the north off the glacier. Local winds may be exaggerated by stormy weather in Valdez Arm and the Sound, but usually continue to blow from the north and are significantly less than those recorded at the buoys. Because of the protection of Glacier Island to the south and the mainland to the north, local sea conditions are rarely very rough and strong winds experienced elsewhere in the Sound rarely hinder sailing and kayaking activities near the camp.
To help those planning a vacation determine the best time to come and what conditions to expect, we also include links to historical, monthly climate summaries .
