All excursions venture into Prince William Sound, home of some of the highest coastal mountains in the nation.While cruising in the protected waters of the Sound, you will have the opportunity to view the abundant wildlife that make this area home: sea otters, seals, sea lions, whales, porpoise, bald eagles, and a variety of other marine bird life. Throughout the day your knowledgeable captains and crew will interpret the rich cultural and natural history of the area focusing on subjects such as geology, the Klondike Gold rush of '98, the commercial fishing industry, the shipping of oil, including a marine tour of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Terminal. One of the highlights of the trip to Growler Island Camp is the visit to Columbia Glacier. Stan Stephens' skippers are masters at navigating the ice flows and will insure that you get as close a look at the glacier as is practicable.

Trip 1
Valdez - Growler Island Camp -Valdez
The full day trip to the camp leaves Valdez at 9:00 am and visits Unakwik Inlet to observe active Meares Glacier. The participant on this trip has an opportunity to observe both Columbia Glacier which is in drastic retreat and Meares Glacier which is knocking down the forest in its advance. This excursion arrives at Growler Island Camp at 3:00 pm. A 1/2 day kayaking trip may be scheduled for your arrival date $65/person or a 2 hr after dinner kayaking or sailing tour is available on request - $30/person. You may schedule as many nights at the camp with day sailing and kayaking trips as fits your schedule
On your final day at the camp, the tour boat leaves the camp for Valdez at 4:30 pm and arrives in Valdez at 6:00 pm.

Trip 2
Whittier-Growler Island-Whittier*
For those wishing to reach Growler Island from Anchorage, Stan Stephens operates a tourboat between Whittier and Growler Island daily. The boat departs Whittier at 2:15 p.m. (We offer packages which include motorcoach transportation between Anchorage and Whittier.) This trip features a stop at a Kittiwake rookery, visits the world's largest salmon hatchery and the remains of an old abandoned fox farm. Wildlife often viewed along the way includes whales, porpoises, seals, sea lions and eagles. High points of this trip include a visit to a sea lion haulout with puffins swirling overhead and an approach to the Columbia Glacier terminal moraine. Because of the evening arrival at the camp (6:00 pm), guests wishing to schedule sailing and kyaking tours need to plan on staying at least two nights before returning to Whittier. Of course, you may schedule as many nights at the camp with day sailing and kayaking trips as fits your schedule. A 2 hr after dinner kayaking or sailing tour available on request -$30/person.
