Trips from Growler Island Camp
Most of our guided day trips depart from Growler Island Camp on a daily schedule - departure time is a 9:30 am and return to the camp is between 3:30 and 5:30 pm. Sack (dry bag) lunches are provided. Some trips include short hikes and portages. Although there is almost always an opportunity to kayak among icebergs, the Growler Island area is surrounded by a lush sub-polar rainforest laced with verdant, flower-studed alpine meadows. Sea otters, harbor seals, Stellar sea lions, harbor porpoise and occasional Orca and Humpback whales are encountered. River otter, martin, mink, black bear and Sitka black-tail deer inhabit the islands. The pillow lavas along the shore host metal sulfide deposits and several mining prospects. Trips 1, 6 ,7, 8, 9 and 10. |

We offer a limited number of longer trips towing the inflatable kayaks to the Columbia Glacier moraine and to the bear watching streams at the head of Eickelberg and Long Bays (best done in August), A favorite trip is a kayaking tour among the towering icebergs stranded on the abandoned Columbia Glacier moraine in Heather Bay. A hike along the uplifted parts of this moraine affords fascinating insights into the drastic retreat of Columbia Glacier and the rapid recolonization following in its wake. Photographers will enjoy spectacular views of the glacier terminous and ice-packed, newly formed fiord. See trips 2, 3 and 4 on the map. |

While we employ stable and easy to master Aire inflatable kayaks for our novice day trips, experienced kayakers in good physical condition may want to attempt some of the longer guided trips in hardshell kayaks. Suitable trips include a kayak to the western abandoned terminal moraine (Trip 1), a trip to the head of Heather Bay and the eastern moraine (Trip 2), a paddle to Billy's Hole and the western arm of Long Bay (Trip 3), the Growler Bay Portage (Trip 7) and even the 22 mile circumnavigation of Glacier Island (Trip 5). Kayakers on these longer guided trips need to have already mastered rescue techniques with hardshell kayaks and know how to use a paddle float. |
