DAY
1. Our trip begins in the morning at Anadyr Adventures office
with a brief kayaking lesson and safety talk. After loading our
water taxi we settle in for a one and a half hour scenic boat
ride to Columbia Glacier. The largest in Prince William Sound
and the second largest in Alaska, Columbia Glacier offers spectacular
views with mountain peaks towering above 16,000 feet and expansive
ice fields encompassing an area larger than the city of Los Angeles.
Our destination is the protected waters of Heather Bay. The day
is spent kayaking among towering icebergs, exploring the rugged
shorelines of Heather Bay, hiking on recently ice freed landscape
and observing sea otters hauled out on ice floes, seals, eagles,
river otters, mink and often black bears.
At the end of the day we reboard our water taxi for a 45-minute
boat ride across Valdez Arm to Ellamar. This is the time to watch
for humpback and orca whales. After settling in at the lodge be
prepared for a delicious gourmet feast, hot sauna, a roaring fireplace,
good company and comfortable beds.
DAY 2 & 3. The next two days are spent exploring Ellamar and
her surroundings. We have the choice of kayaking, hiking, bird
watching, beachcombing, berry picking, fishing or simply relaxing
and enjoying the scenery. In the afternoon of the third day, we
say goodbye to our hosts and return to Valdez via our water-taxi.
Back in Valdez by 5pm.
