Alaska Native Chief Hat

This traditional styled Norton Sound/Bering Sea Eskimo hunting hat replica , was documented in use In 1880. A collection of one was made in 1843, and is shown in books that show our Alaskan cultures. This hunting hat with its fan of tail feathers has side (volutes) carved in openwork bird designs; the brim ornaments depict the gull, walrus, and seal. The wearing of this hunting hat allowed the hunter To transform himself into becoming more birdlike.
