Alaska Wild

Washington State

Welcome to Alaska.....

Where Denali ("The HIGH One") / Mt. McKinley rises majestically above the surrounding beauty. At 20,300 feet the tallest point in North America. On clear days it can be seen from as far away as Anchorage. Climbers from all over the world come each year to make the climb to the top. On an average less than 50% of the climbers actually make it to the summit. In 1993 my son made the climb with Exlorer Post 286 and reached summit on June 22. See some of his pictures and read his thoughts while making the climb.

Where during the winter on a clear night you can view the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) as they dance across the sky in a variety of colors and everchanging patterns. They can range from a thin ribbon of color to filling the entire sky with splender. Visit Dick Hutchinson page on Aurora Boralis Photography for tips and some photos taken of the lights. Also visit the University of Alaska, Fairbanks to get a forcast on when/where the Northern Lights can be viewed.

Wild life in Alaska. On any given trip outside the city limits you can come upon some form of wild life. Mountain Goats come down to the roads edge just a short distance south of Anchorage. Moose can be found almost anywhere in the state and sometmes in the city limits wondering the streets of Anchorage. Caribou migrate across the state and on trips north to Fairbanks you have a chance of viewing them. The Brown Bear may be harder to come across but on occasion can be spotted from the highways. This photo was taken along the Alaska Highway outside Tok Alaska in early spring.

Fishing Alaska.... Weather it's for Halibut or one of several species of Salmon not much can beat the fishing. Much of the tourism to Alaska is visiters here for the fishing. Halibut a bottom fish can weigh as much as 400 lbs. ones in the photo here are in the 80 to 100 lb range. Salmon runs very from King Salmon, Red Salmon, Silver Salmon, Pink Salmon and Chum Salmon, at any time during the summer months one species will be in one of the many streams in Alaska.
