Alaska Craftsman Home Building Workshops

Workshop Schedule

ACHP offers eight different workshops at this time. All of the workshops developed and taught by ACHP are designed specifically for northern regions. These regions have very diverse climatic zones with extreme temperatures, as well as precipitation, soil, and cultural differences. All of these factors must be taken into consideration when designing workshop programs and building standards to meet the demands of every zone. For this reason, ACHP has developed manuals for each of the workshops, along with curriculum materials, to address these regional requirements.

Who Should Take These Workshops?

ACHP workshops benefit people with all backgrounds and levels of building experience. ACHP has already trained a majority of Alaska's builders who depend on ACHP to provide the training required to become licensed as residential contractors in Alaska. Many others are reached by ACHP workshops, including owner-builders, homeowners, engineers, architects, government agencies, regional housing authorities, Tribal and Village governments, Realtors, bankers, and appraisers. ACHP provides the training and knowledge necessary to build energy-efficient, cost-effective, healthy, and durable housing.

What do ACHP Workshops Teach?

ACHP workshops introduce the building science concepts necessary to build energy-efficient homes. These concepts are then translated into construction materials and techniques that are appropriate for northern climates. ACHP is also dedicated to continuing each participant's education, after the workshops, through ACHP's continuing education workshops and referral service for answers or directions for your inquiries.

What is the Track Record of these Construction Techniques?

Thousands of homes have been built in Scandinavia, Canada, and now Alaska, using energy-efficient techniques. The Alaska Craftsman Home Program has drawn on many years of research in other countries and at the University of Alaska to develop its own, Alaska-adapted approach. ACHP's innovations have won national awards and international recognition.
